Legitimately And Illegitimately Downloaded Software While some spyware is downloaded legitimately it is most commonly bundled with freeware or shareware software. When an Internet user downloads this software, they unknowingly download the spyware application onto their computer. What It Does While different spyware applications tend to result in different actions, and each records different information, spyware can potentially download everything you view, input, or download and upload on the Internet. This can include bank details if you don’t use secure websites and connections as well as your viewing behavior and buying patterns. How You Are Exposed To Spyware It is notoriously easy to pick up spyware applications and have them downloaded on your computer without your consent but can be very difficult to remove it, and in some cases even detecting it can be hard. Anti-spyware software is designed to trace and combat spyware on your computer but because it can only detect known spyware one of the most important factors of any anti-spyware application is the size and update frequency of the database. Introduction To ParetoLogic ParetoLogic
has two primary products for Antispyware protection.
As well as featuring one of the largest definition databases in the industry, ParetoLogic AS also has a feature rich database that makes the user interface intuitive and simple to command. One of the biggest advantages of using ParetoLogic AS is that it gives the user total control over the level of protection, frequency of scans, and many other factors. You can choose whether to automate the major tasks or instigate them yourself, you can choose how and when to download and install any updates that are required. Fully Customizable Scanning ParetoLogic AS has three levels of scan: quick scan, full scan and custom scan. The quick scan, as the name suggests, is the fastest and most convenient of the three options. It looks through the places that are considered to be the most likely for spyware applications to be hiding. It also uses a limited amount of the definitions found in the definition database. The quick scan is perfect if you have little time but enjoy the safety of scanning regularly. Full Scan The full scan looks through every file and folder and through the entire definition database. Because of how regularly ParetoLogic update their definition database and the sheer number of definitions contained within that database, a full scan will find any known spyware and take the appropriate action to clean the file or remove it, if necessary. Custom Scan And Advised Options A custom scan enables you to choose exactly where to scan and what to scan for. This feature is ideal for the advanced user. Other users are well advised to run a daily quick scan and a full scan every month or even every week. If new spyware is released and your definition database has yet to be updated then some spyware can still find its way onto your PC. By scanning and fixing, though, you are able to stop the spyware in its tracks before it is able to do any real damage. Backup And Restore
Cycle Detection Many spyware features instigate popup and popunder advertisements. In some cases a cycle of one popup after another is instigated by a certain action. Stopping this cycle often means turning off your computer but once ParetoLogic recognizes that a cycle of popups has begun or is about to begin it will encourage you to take action and prevent it from continuing saving you time and effort. This cycle detection is unique to ParetoLogic and an excellent addition to anti-spyware software. In the future, it is likely that this type of feature will become standard but you could have access to it immediately. Function Automation One of the biggest problems with anti-spyware prevention is keeping on top of everything. After several weeks of religiously downloading the necessary updates to the software and the definition database it is commonplace to let it slip. The same is also often true of running the scan itself. ParetoLogic AS can be completely automated to prevent this from happening. Not only can you automatically run updates and scan your computer you can also choose to automatically restore unauthorized changes to your browser home page and choose a time to best suit you for updates and scans. This saves you time and ensures that you are always up to date in your fight against spyware. Combating General Malware, Adware, Spyware, And Much More Despite being called anti-spyware, the ParetoLogic program is much more powerful than even preventing spyware. It can also detect and delete Trojans, adware, popup software, Keyloggers, and browser hijackers. These types of Malware not only cause irritation and annoyance but cause your computer to run slowly, and for your personal information to potentially be forwarded to third parties. Using ParetoLogic AS is one of the most powerful, robust, and surprisingly simple ways to help protect your online privacy. The User Interface An important consideration in the downloading and use of any software is how complex its user interface is. Even the most advanced software is essentially useless if you don’t have the capability or knowledge to operate it. The ParetoLogic AS interface consists of two tabs. The anti-spyware tab enables you to perform scans and manage the results as well as view previous results and similar actions covered below. The second tab is the active protection tab and lets you govern how well the software protects your online privacy with numerous settings. Anti-Spyware – Home The home page holds all information that is relevant to your current settings. It informs you of the level of protection currently being offered, any issues with your latest scan, and the dates of your latest scan and definition database update. You can also view exactly how many items of spyware are in the current definition database to see exactly how well you are covered. There are two buttons that quickly enable you to perform a quick or full scan and links to the Pareto user community and other valuable information pertaining to spyware and online security. The scan page has three options; quick, full, and custom scan enabling you to determine how deep you wish to scan and how quickly results will be found. The best course of action is to schedule a daily quick scan and a weekly full scan. The system is a lot quicker than other anti-spyware programs and you will be surprised at just how quickly it can complete a full scan of your entire system. Anti-Spyware – Ignore The ignore screen lists any pages that you have previously chosen to ignore when they have been found in scans. From here you can select items that you have previously ignored but now wish to scan once again. Anti-Spyware – Backup One of the beneficial features of this software is that it includes a backup and restore function. Files are automatically backed up once you have completed a scan and before you choose to remove or repair any items. Files and entries that have previously been backed up appear in this screen where you can restore or delete the backup. Anti-Spyware – Schedule Scheduling tasks is something that you should try to do immediately if you decide to purchase the software. By doing so you can ensure that regardless of what you are doing at the time, ParetoLogic can update its software and virus database or perform scans on a regular basis. You can add several layers to your schedule. To add a new action click on the schedule button and follow the on screen instructions. Active Protection – Overview The overview page of the active protection section displays and enables you to change the level of protection. Options are available for each of the following sections: Internet Monitors Through this section it is possible to set the home page of your browser to any page you desire. If your browser is then hijacked you can either be informed of the change and take action yourself or, when set to full protection, changes will automatically be detected and prevented. Malicious spyware often uses browser helper objects to mask its presence or to compile information on your Internet activity. You can receive notification if any potential threat is downloaded via this method. You can also prevent browser menus from being altered or toolbars or buttons being added. Again, this is a common way for spyware to install itself on your computer without being noticed. Windows Monitor Some malicious software harbors within the main files of Windows. In these cases, even after removal, they will reinstall themselves or restart themselves when you next turn your computer on. The Windows monitor can also prevent the entire Windows operating system and your computer from being hijacked. Blocked Events And Logged Events The blocked events tab enables you to view any settings or items that you have previously blocked and re-enable them should the need arise. The logs let you view any items that have been blocked by the automatic protection settings. Once you’ve completed a scan, you can view the results in the scan page of the anti-virus section. Through this page you can view all details regarding any particular malicious threat and you can take the appropriate action to ensure that it is effectively dealt with. Interpreting And Acting On The Results Results are categorized by the vendor making referencing and researching much easier. The threat level is displayed by way of a colored bar ranging from yellow as a possible or mild threat to red, a severe threat. Clicking on the characteristics link will divert you to the ParetoLogic website and gives full details regarding the spyware threat. This information includes the purpose of the file and its potentially undesirable actions. Where available there is also a link to the website. Clicking Ignore is only advisable if you know exactly what the file is and are sure that it is not intended to cause any damage to your computer or take your information. Doing so will mean no action is taken against that particular threat and it will be placed in the ignore list of the software. Once the scan is complete, simply tick all the boxes of those that you wish to clean and press the clean button in the bottom corner. That’s really all it takes. How Spyware Affects Your Computer Performance Spyware can be responsible for a number of computer performance problems. Not least, the software utilizes sections of your PC and takes up valuable memory. By doing this, it will inevitably slow down other processes and can cause some to stop running completely. Some spyware also hunts in packs. As one application installs itself onto your computers it will discreetly start downloading other applications. This kind of spyware will quickly eat away at your PC performance and your computer will slow down and begin to act unusually. Forms Of Malware and Spyware As well as applications that collect your browsing habits and, in some cases, your keystrokes and then submit them back to a third party there are other problems you may encounter. Dialers force the telephone connected to your computer to ring given phone numbers. In most cases these are premium rate numbers. A downloader downloads further files and applications on to your computer. These can cause further and potentially more lasting damage. Flooders are purely disruptive but still potentially crippling to your computer or network. They literally flood your computer with data until it is unable to operate under its normal conditions. A RAT or remote administration tool gives administrative access of your computer to a third party. This allows them to search your computer files and folders and lets them restart and shut down your PC and much more. Beating Spyware The only way to beat spyware is to fully and completely remove the application. While some less advanced spyware applications may be relatively easy to spot, find, and eradicate this generally isn’t the case. Even some spyware software will struggle to find the very latest in spyware applications but because ParetoLogic update their definition database on a daily basis and send regular updates to your application, you will find spyware on your computer that you may have previously missed, even with other software. Prevention Is Better Than A Cure Of course, prevention is better than finding a cure. If you can stop the spyware and other malicious software from downloading onto your computer in the first place then you won’t even have to worry about removing it once it is on your PC. Again, ParetoLogic Anti-Spyware is the perfect solution. The real time automatic prevention makes it impossible for any spyware in the database to install itself onto your computer. ParetoLogic Anti-Spyware Conclusion ParetoLogic AS is a powerful but simple to use anti-spyware application. The ability to prevent and protect makes it more useful than a search and destroy package and because of the vastly expansive size of the definitions database and the wide range of functions that are included in the software, ParetoLogic AS is highly recommended as being one of the most effective anti-spyware applications available. Spyware is a real problem but you can reduce your exposure and beat any applications that do sneak through with ParetoLogic.
