Renaming Files Using Windows And Applications

Windows Explorer offers a method of renaming files. Most applications also use a file viewer window which also has the capability of altering file names as and when required. However, neither of these methods are particularly quick or efficient when it comes to renaming more than one file. Renaming batches of files can take a huge amount of time, especially if you want to rename them according to certain aspects of the file's details such as keywords or creation date. Using the Mass Renamer couldn't be much simpler. Once you have downloaded the executable file from the GetData website it's ready to run. There's no installation required because the application will run directly from the downloaded file. Once downloaded all you need do is click the icon.

The Simplistic Mass Renamer Interface

The main window is self explanatory and simple. No technical knowledge or expertise is required in order to run Mass Renamer. There are essentially three display sections to this Window.

Choosing Files For Renaming

The first section at the top of the application window shows the list of files that you wish to rename. In order to add a file to this list you can use one of two methods – drag and drop or browse. Dragging and dropping can be done from any Explorer window to the main application window. Alternatively you can use the traditional method of browsing for files by clicking the Add.. button. This brings up a File Explorer window where you can browse your system and add as many files as you like.

Selecting Fields For Use In Renaming

At the bottom left of the screen there are two option Windows – Available Fields and Fields Used In Filename. Users can pick from any of the predetermined fields on the left and click the Add button to move them to the right. By doing so it is possible to set certain criteria that will be used in the naming of the files. For instance it is possible to name a file using the Subject of the email or the Keywords of a Word document.

Other Renaming Options

As well as selecting fields to use in this way it is also possible to add a custom prefix and/or suffix as well as a delimiter. The final option is a tick box entitled “Auto increment on existing filename”. This means that if two files are renamed and end up with the same file name the second will be given an incremental suffix to help differentiate the two files. An example would be two files called “Mass Renamer”. The second would be named “Mass Renamer 2”.

Completing The Mass Renaming Process

When you have selected all the options you want to include click the Generate New Filenames to see a list of the filenames that will be used or the Rename button to immediately begin the renaming process. Once completed you can safely close this window with all files having been renamed.
