Recovering Deleted Wav Files
What Are Wav Files?
wav is short for waveform and is an audio file
type. This standard for storing audio on
computers is used by Windows and IBM machines
around the world. The audio is stored in chunks
and while it is possible that the audio is
compressed before it becomes a raw wav file it
is most common for the wav file to consist of
uncompressed audio data. These raw audio files
are extremely common and popular because they
offer a cross platform standard that can be
accessed and utilized by Windows and Mac based
computers alike.
The Popularity Of Wav Files
Online music sharing has actually brought about
a slight decline in the use of wav files,
because of the comparatively large size of the
raw files. Other, more compressed and smaller
file types such as mp3 have been readily adopted
in preference. However, the wav format remains
one of the more common audio formats available
today. When attempting to download wav music
files errors can occur and most often simply
because of the size of the file.
Corrupt Files
Any file can become corrupt when downloading or
installing is interrupted. In the case of
downloading wav files over peer to peer or music
download sites this can happen for a number of
reasons. If your Internet connection goes down
or experiences an unusually high amount of
volume on the line (a problem with dialup
connections) then the file is likely to become
corrupt.
Recovering From The Accidental Deletion Of Files
Another problem with downloading large wav files
is the amount of room they potentially take up
on the hard drive or other storage device of
your computer. For this reason it is common, and
indeed advised, that users regularly clear out
wav files that are no longer needed or obsolete.
This is good, standard practice but it can lead
to errors. It is not uncommon to delete files
and then realize that it was the incorrect file
or that you do in fact need that file. Because
wav is a format that is still commonly used by a
number of applications this happens more
frequently than you might imagine.
Why Deleted Files Aren't Really Deleted
Fortunately,the Windows operating system, in
particular, was designed with optimum speed in
mind. When files are deleted from a Windows PC
they are not physically removed from your hard
drive or other storage device. Instead the
operating system or firmware will mark the file
as being deleted but leave it in place exactly
as it was before you “deleted” it. This is even
true once you delete a file from the recycle bin
of your desktop. When you next attempt to write
a file to the hard drive your operating system
will attempt to rewrite to either empty space or
to any of the areas inhabited by marked files.
Stop Everything
The first thing to note if you have accidentally
deleted a wav file and you wish to recover it is
that the less attempts you make to write any
information to your hard drive the greater your
chance of a successful recovery. If you can
attempt to recover the file without writing any
more information to the hard drive then you have
a much greater chance of success.
Using Data Recovery Software
Data recovery applications are affordable and
extremely effective. They tend to use general
recovery techniques that work effectively for
the vast majority of file types. The best
applications are those that also include a set
of rules for specific file types that can prove
more problematic to recover with general
recovery techniques. Some applications
specifically work with hundreds of different
file types as well as many more that are
unsupported.
How Data Recovery Software Works
Data recovery software will provide you with a
scanning engine that scans your entire hard
drive or other storage device. Once it has
finished scanning you will be presented with a
list of the files it has found. In most cases
you will also receive either a preview or
specific file details that serve a dual purpose.
Not only can you ensure that you are retrieving
the correct file but if a file can be previewed
then it can also be recovered.
Is Data Recovery Right For You?
Data recovery is not something that many of us
consider because when we click the delete button
or we select the delete option we understandably
believe that the file is deleted. Windows and
some other operating systems rarely work this
way and, instead, they simply mark the files for
deletion. This means that they are still
resident on your computer even once they have
been “deleted”. Fortunately, this in turn means
that data recovery software can effectively
recover the file unless it has been overwritten
by another file.
