Recovering Files From An Operational iPod

File Deletion Does Not Immediately Remove Files

Most computer hardware or peripherals do not fully delete files when you click delete. Instead the files are marked as “deleted” but left in place on the device. This is equally true of an iPod or other MP3 player as it is of, for example, a computer hard drive or a flash drive. When you next attempt to write a new file to the device it will consider these marked files as being fair ground for copying the information, subsequently writing over the “deleted” files in the process. This procedure may seem like it can drain resources but it rarely does and also means that it is possible to recover deleted files even once you believe you have completely removed them from your iPod.

Overwriting Marked Files

The first and most important thing to remember is not to write any more files to your iPod before you have recovered the files you wish to save. Once you start writing new files to the device there is the potential that you could be overwriting all the marked files leaving you with nothing to recover. While some files may remain resident because of awkward sizes or a more convenient location to save the file it is best not to leave this to chance.

Backing Up Existing iPod Contents

You should also consider backing up all the information on your iPod. If you use third party recovery software then you can select applications that do not alter the contents of your iPod and they do not save any new data to the device but it is always best to have a backup copy in case of data loss. Backup all files on the iPod to a secure location on your PC or an external storage device such as a flash drive or DVD.

Using Third Party Software

Manual file recovery from an iPod is not a simple task and the easiest option is to use third party software. This negates the need to search the device using file structures and will typically speed up the entire process and improve the success rate. The cost of third party recovery software has plummeted in direct contrast to the increase in technology. The software is more powerful but less expensive and can typically be purchased for the same price as any other application or program that you might buy.

Following The On Screen Instructions

Using third party software you will be given concise and accurate on screen instructions in order that you can run through the entire process in very little time and with no previous data recovery knowledge. Once the software has scanned your iPod you will be given a list of files that are currently resident on the device as well as those that have been marked for deletion. In most cases you will also be given the option to either restore the files back to the iPod or to a location on your computer.

Where To Save Restored Items

Restoring the files to a location on your computer means that you will already have a backup of the files and you will be able to pick and choose exactly which ones you want copied to your iPod. Alternatively, restoring them directly to your iPod means that you don't need to transfer them from your computer to the device.

Ipod File Recovery Conclusion

The iPod is an extremely popular personal audio player. It typically allows for the storage and playback of a large number of music files and many members of the iPod family also enable the management of music files that are resident on the device. While this offers an easy user experience it can lead to accidental deletion. Using third party recovery software it is possible to recover these deleted files without altering or removing any of the existing contents.
