How To Recover
Data From A Notebook Hard Drive
The Potential
Impact Of Data Loss
Lost data can
cause serious problems for both individual and
business users. It can mean the loss of personal
information and personal items such as family
photographs or personally created movies or
music. Alternatively it could mean losing a work
project that you have been working on for many
weeks or the complete loss of customer account
details and contact details to retrieve them.
Notebook computers are particularly popular with
people that require computer use in more than
one location. People that work from home as well
as the office or individuals that enjoy
accessing the Internet wherever they might be
are prime examples.
The Difficulties
Of Recovering A Notebook Hard Drive
No matter who you
are and what you use your notebook for you are
at risk of losing data. A failed hard drive,
corrupt or deleted files, spyware and virus
infection, and human error can all lead to the
loss of files and data. Similarly, a poor
installation, or the uninstallation of another
application may remove some files that are
required for the proper running of another
application. The problem with a failing hard
drive on a laptop is that it is much more
difficult to gain physical access to the
hardware itself and it is certainly more
difficult to add the hard drive to another
computer in order to help retrieve the
information it holds.
Connecting The
Hard Drive To Another Computer
There are ways to
retrieve lost information from a damaged
notebook hard drive, though. With a desktop
computer it is possible to manually look for
deleted files by plugging the hard drive into
another computer as the secondary or slave drive
and then using Windows Explorer to navigate
through the files. This is because the Windows
operating system does not actually delete files
when we click the delete button or choose the
delete option. In order to save time Windows
will instead mark the file as “deleted” meaning
that it is OK for another file or application to
overwrite this file in the future. Until that
happens the file remains resident on your hard
drive.
Accessing The
Hard Drive Through Windows Explorer
There are
hardware accessories available that enable you
to plug a notebook hard drive into another
computer as an external hard drive and the
effect is similar. You will be able to access
the hard drive through the Windows Explorer
screen and hopefully find the the deleted files
you are looking for. Another alternative is to
use data cables and connect the laptop to
another computer. This may enable you to view
the content of the hard drive from the other
computer, although this won't necessarily work
in all cases.
Third Party
Applications
Some third party
recovery software will work independently of
your operating system. This software is
installed on your computer and once you restart
your computer with the disk in the disk drive
you will be prompted to begin the recovery
process. This means that the software can check
a solitary hard drive located on your notebook
without having to remove it in the first place.
The software will complete the recovery process
as per the options you decide on and will then
provide you with the option to restart your
computer as normal.
Restoring A
Notebook Hard Drive Is Easy With The Proper
Tools
Restoring a
notebook hard drive does not have to be any more
complicated than restoring a standard desktop
one. However, it is more difficult to do so
manually using another computer. Some third
party applications that operate independently of
the Windows operating system enable users to
recover a hard drive and repair a corrupt
operating system without having to remove the
hard drive. This makes these applications
perfect for this use.
